mass storage SSFDC formatting

Some cards (Smart Media) needs a special logical format applied to them. This format also know as SSFDC is mandatory for those cards because some dumb devices (e.g digital cameras) that use them don't allow for any deviance from this standard.

I have tried to support this special DOS format inside the Unit Table disk driver on MacOS 9.x, but its like combatting PC Exchange support in a backward way. It works for some cards but it sound like between the logical format phase (writing DOS FAT and all DOS structure) PC Exchange is writing a scrach area to store some parameters and because I overwrite it with a correct SSFDC structure it doesn't find the stored data and choke reporting the format has failed.

However when I replug the card with the correct SSFDC format it works perfectly well. So I'm sure that my format is correct (also checked with an industrial analyser for compliance and it report it as OK).

I would like to know how it is possible to take care of the logical formatting myself and then mount the device back normally as it happen when I unplug then replug the device (expressed in an other way it is possible to override the logical format step performed by PC Exchange inside the driver). It will be possible to write an application to do this, but I'd rather stuck inside the driver if it is possible.

I'm also wondering how to do it on MacOS X as the format need to be applied inside the disk first aid panel that deal with formatting the device. Is it possible on MacOS X to override this special DOS panel and replace it with a specialized version of my own ?

Thanks for any advice.
