When using the SCSI Format Unit command
(op code 0x04) how does the host deal with the fact a LUN may have multiple
partitions? This command is targeted to a LUN, not a partition, and will
obviously destroy all partition data
That's exactly what it does. It leaves you with completely blank media.
requiring further "formatting" by
writing a master boot record, boot sector, FATs, etc., using SCSI Write
commands.
That's "Initialisation" in Mac terms.
Under what conditions does the host generate this command?
Usually only in response to a Format request from the user using disk
formatting software (Disk Utility in X, Drive Setup in 9 or a third
party utility like HDT).
