I wrote a command line program to test the USB device before I wrote a full driver. It was a good thing, because we found a firmware problem in the device that caused intermittent failures, and required fixing of the device firmware.
It is strange that it sometimes works. It sounds like you have the pipe opened correctly if you can write to it.
