Alex - First: This list isn't for LIBUSB issues, no matter if on OSX or elsewhere; it's for Apple USB issues. I'd highly recommend the LIBUSB list for such issues.

That said: If you haven't tried MacPorts, they have the "most recent" version of LIBUSB available ... but please note that LIBUSB isn't being significantly supported any longer. They're transitioning to different ownership and a new name "OpenUSB". Latest is v0.1.12, with a few patches depending on platform. Also note that LIBUSB doesn't support true async communications under OSX.

LIBUSB is build-able in the "standard" way, even on OSX:

./configure
make
make check

Thus the questions: What OSX version? What XCode version? Are the developer tools as provided by Apple, or are some installed from other sources? If you have alternate sources, you need to make sure CPATH, LDFLAGS, CFLAGS, and PKG_CONFIG_PATH are set properly ... do yo know if they are?

And, to answer your last query: Yes, I've built LIBUSB from scratch as well as using MacPorts ... either way works.
