Gary,

are you sure it is not the appearing scrollbar which forces the content to
the left?

This had often fooled me in the past as i hardly noticed, that due to too
much content for the window size, Safari or any other Browser had to display
a "Scrollbar" which of course pushed the content to the left.
 
This always looks terrible when switching between pages with and without a
scrollbar, but unfortunately, Safari can't display the scrollbar to the
right of a window to circumvent this as it then might just drop on the floor
;-)
