OK, it does seem that nowadays other WebKit apps don't crash when Reader is the set to show pdfs - they just get a blank view. It certainly used to crash, but whether the crash was fixed in an OS or Acrobat update I can't tell anymore. However the end result is not much better for the user or our support department since the user sees it as a fault in our software that we can't display PDFs.

A proper fix for this sometime would be much appreciated.
