WOCheckboxMatrix Question

I have a component that has an embeded WOCheckboxMatrix.  The list binding is bound to a function that returns a subset of all options based on a category.  The selections binding is bound to a function that returns the selections within that same category.  The two functions are getFilteredItemList and getFilteredItemSelections.  When the form is submitted WO wants a function like setFilteredItemSelections to return the selections to.

What does this function need to contain so that the appropriate selections are added to the database and those that were unselected are removed from the database? Any help would be appreciated.
