I've tried turning both of those off and on, but it makes no difference. gVim does have an option to disable the alt key for opening menus, but that didn't help. Typing alt+s, for instance, produces an o with an acute accent instead of a German "sharp s".
You may be able to use xmodmap to map option to another of the X11 mod keys.
