Re: [Tiger] "ALT" key does not work with X11

At least for gtk based applications, this is a result of a gtk v. Apple X11 configuration conflict that's detailed here: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=304930

The cause of this is Apple has mapped the option key to both the X11 mod1 and Mode_Switch key symbols and gtk doesn't support this if the XKEYBOARD extension is not present. I was able to run X11 with the XKEYBOARD extension enabled from a terminal window, but was unable to figure out how to enable it by default.

You may be able to use xmodmap to map option to another of the X11 mod keys.

I have a bug open with Apple, but have yet to receive a substantial response.

Hi,

Because nothing changes since some times, I have subscribed to this list...

Just for say your ALT key does not work with X11 since I installed Tiger +X11 (bundled with Tiger). For example, following applications (list non exhaustive) :

gnumeric
gedit
gnome-terminal
xchat
OpenOffice.org ( both 1.1.x and 1.9.xx)

...the following keys are *not* working : [ { } ] \ | €

This, just because ALT key ( Mode_Switch) does *not* work. xev looks correct, but nothing appears :-/

Of course ( strange..) xterm and Terminal.app have complete keyboard.

Looks like XKEYBOARD extension is not present. It's not very kind to desactive this key, because a lot of X11 specific applications won't work correctly anymore without this extension.

FYI, xmodmap has no effect with this key. So, is there a way to activate correctly Mode_Switch ? Oreven something special to do to use the keyboard the same way as xterm does ?

I'm working on the Mac OSX OpenOffice.org (X11) port, and of course, if something special has to change in our code, dont hesitate to send me some tips (not simply read the doc... ), but for a correct linking or what is to be modified or respected to make it work is welcome.

Waiting, I explain to the OpenOffice.org users this problem is not our fault.

BTW: I have tried to find doc with XCode about charset, locales, keyboard and XCode without success : it seems not work correctly ? (completion doesn't work, missing doc.. )

Every help is welcome. Thank's in advance

Regards, eric bachard
