I cured my immediate problem (getting X-11 to launch) by compiling Ben Byer's 1.2a3 Xquartz, and by simply renaming my .xinitrc and .mwmrc files in $HOME (all the .bash_xxxx files seem to be read correctly). OpenOffice runs fine as do the several other X Window programs I routinely run. Unfortunately, being an AIX-trained Unix guy (and proud of it), I now have the daunting task of getting mwm to run under this Leopard version of X. If there are any other Motif people out there, I'd be interested to learn what you've learned.
