I'm in the same boat. Rarely if ever press the Alt/Option key, but
map CapsLock to Control, and use the Apple key for Meta. Only sane
way to live, IMHO.
I believe the Alt infestation comes from Linux software developed by
people who grew up on Windows instead of Unix, but that's just a
theory.
