Also, if it's looking for the dependencies with pkg-config, make sure you do:

export PKG_CONFIG_PATH="/usr/X11/lib/pkgconfig:${PKG_CONFIG_PATH}"

This will sound strange, but is /usr/X11/bin in your $PATH? If not, try putting it there; that should make configure scripts notice that you have X11 installed in /usr/X11. Strange, but true! (hopefully)
