Using your steps....

I run xclipboard in X11, but I have verified that the results of the above
steps are the same when xclipboard is not running.  Other than that, this is a
pretty vanilla OS X installation... I don't go for the bells and whistles that
various folk seem unable to pass by; definitely no clipboard "enhancers".

Above steps also work if I use Thunderbird in place of M$Word.
