FWIW, if I follow those steps, nothing got pasted at all the first time I
followed this sequence, and "Show Clipboard" in the Finder showed that the
contents of the clipboard were "unknown". When I did it again, the
originally copied url got pasted (G5, 10.4.10/8R218, X11 1.1.3).

This is my experience as well, and I believe the experience of most others
on this list.

So, I believe I speak for everyone when I say, "Mark: WHYYYYYY?", and note
that I am jealous of his more-appropriate functionality.
