Here it depends on what is selected last.

Character classes. For instance, under Debian,
/etc/X11/app-defaults/XTerm contains:

! Here is a pattern that is useful for double-clicking on a URL:
!*charClass: 33:48,35:48,37-38:48,43-47:48,58:48,61:48,63-64:48,95:48,126:48

I personnally use the following:

*VT100.charClass:               43:48,45-58:48,126:48

New xterm versions have new options: on2Clicks, on3Clicks, etc.
But this is not yet in the xterm provided in Mac OS X.

I prefer the app-defaults way:

XAPPLRESDIR=$HOME/.app-defaults
export XAPPLRESDIR
