It looks like the fundamental bug in is Xquartz and there is a fix if
you don't mind replacing binaries:

Apple knows about it:

I just came across another case where apparently this same endian bug shows up, and this time it is not related to ssh'ing into some linux box. It concerns the cursor in an educational program for children aged 2-10 "gcompris" <http://gcompris.net/-en->

Gcompris uses several mouse pointer forms, the generic one being a kind of big fat 3D arrowhead. The program builds and runs OK on OSX, both on ppc and on intel (a Fink package is now available). On ppc, the mouse pointers look OK, but on intel instead of the solid red 3D triangle, one gets some semi-transparent thin sort of flat fish-hook. The other forms of the mouse pointer are similarly affected.

If one replaces Apple's Xquartz by the patched one from the above link, the problem goes away.

Apple: Now that this problem doesn't concern only linux geeks any more, but perhaps small children and their parents, how about considering fixing the bug?

Here are two screenshots of the gcompris window showing the mouse pointer in the form of an eraser tool (in the rectangle left of the center):

(I used Grab.app to catch these, and it is notoriously difficult to snap cursors with Grab; this is the reason why I don't show the generic cursor form, only the eraser.)
