hmmm ... interesting:

scm-leop:~ scm$ defaults read org.x.X11 |grep enable_fake
    "enable_fake_buttons" = 0;

though the "box" is checked under "preferences" ... let me dig around - I may 
be missing something here ... you got me on the right track ...
