Nextly, be sure that something else has not been mangled in your modified
.xintirc: what happens if you have
xterm &
exec twm
as the last two lines in your ~/.xinitrc (and in place of the last two lines
that are there now)?? Maybe you should make that change, try it, then show us
your .xinitrc again.
