Have you ever been able to get a window manager running with X? If so, which
window manager? and using what instantiation of xinitrc? Can you get things
back to a state where that works again? I confess to having some difficulty
following exactly where you've been and being sure that I (and you) understand
the set of (small and incremental) changes you made that got you to the
current (non-working) state.
