Re: Focus follows mouse - X11 vs. aqua apps

I use CodeTek virtual desktop on a G5 running 10.3. It has a focus-follows-mouse feature that applies to normal OSX apps and X11 windows. I tried that for a bit, but the normal Mac apps (aqua, carbon, cocoa, whatever) became hard to work with. By the time my mouse reached the Menu bar, the window I wanted to work with had almost always lost the focus. I turned that feature off and edited the X11 plist file as described near the start of this thread to get focus-follows-mouse for X11 windows only.

One of the messages commented that focus-follows-mouse didn't apply to emacs. That sounds like the user has installed one of the native OSX ports of emacs. aquamacs is an example and I have tried a couple of others over the years. Focus-follows-mouse works with the X11 based emacs I installed using Fink.

When offered a choice between a native OSX app and an X11 port of the app, I decide by picking the one that is the same type as the other apps I want to use it with. For example, I use emacs to edit files I plan to read with X11 apps, so I use an X11 version of emacs.

I suggest you compile the X11 version of Lyx and run that under X11. Then you will get the desired behavior.
There is no "focus follows mouse" for non-X11 apps.
You can turn it on for Terminal, with
defaults write com.apple.Terminal AutoFocus -bool True
(I think). Then you get focus-follows-mouse between X11 apps and Terminal, or between Terminal windows. Focus-follows-mouse doesn't work for arbitrary Aqua apps because then there'd be no way to move the mouse to the menu bar without accidentally switching apps.

I don't follow you. So what if you switch apps, that's the idea of "focus follows mouse," right? I don't see that being a show-stopper for Aqua. I think Apple has just as usual decided we "don't need that feature." That's the downside of Apple. I'm experiencing lots of "Apple doesn't think I need that" with my new iPhone too. :-|
