Select and paste has been a part of X11 since long before Apple ever had
anything to do with it. For whatever reason Apple did not implement it properly
when using X11 on OSX. Too bad.

You're misunderstanding. He's pasting into an Aqua app. So he needs command-C and command-V. The select and middle-click thing works fine in X11. Apple did not implement any of that part, it's built into the X server.
