This is probably because xclipboard supports only text. The
xclipboard man page says:

   The xclipboard program is used to collect and display text selections
                                                         ^^^^
   that are sent to the CLIPBOARD by other clients. [...]

BTW, xclipboard doesn't work at all on my Mac OS X machine. I can't
even quit it in the normal way (I need to kill it).
