£ sign in X11

I may be wrong, but since upgrading to 10.4.9 I cant enter the £ symbol

it comes out ok in all the other apps, but in X11 local terminal on my Mac I get a # followed by carriage return

Jed:~ kev_stone$ #
Jed:~ kev_stone$

and when logged onto my HP-UX box I get this symbol

[telepath@tbsm04] £

This is weird as I paste it it becomes a £ sign, but in the terminal display it is

like >> (but dead close together)

Also the copy (command C) produces a small letter c instead of copying to the clip board.

I am probably doing something stupid here, but it is doing my head in, I need to enter a £ sign
into a file on the HP-UX box, and I am getting grief over this. Anyone have any idea?

Thanks
