Are you starting the application with the X11 terminal or the normal
terminal (Terminal.app or iTerm)?
If you are not using the X11 terminal, then you have to do the
following for a normal terminal:
export DISPLAY=:0.0
X11 must also be running, obviously.
You can add the export line to your .profile and it will always
execute when you open a terminal.
