reinstalling X11

I need to install X11 on my system, but when I try to do a custom install from the OSX 10.4.0 installation CD, I get a message to the effect that "cannot do any installations: a more recent version of the system is in place". The only option apparently is to completely remove the new system (10.4.8) and reinstall the old, and then do all the updates.

Is there some way (a special keystroke, perhaps), that will allow me to override this and just install X11?
