Re: Eliminating the xterm

I'm not sure if this belongs in this thread or some other thread.

First, I have the updated libx11 and XQuartz 1.2a9 installed that were provided by Ben Byer.

Second, I had removed X11.app from the Dock where it had been under Tiger and changed System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. When I booted the system, an X server would be launched and an xterm opened with the default geometry instead of the geometry that I had set for the Terminal.

The X icon would appear in the dock. The red, yellow, and green balls were present on the xterm window and appeared to indicate that the window had focus. It didn't although it was in the foreground and all other applications had "grayed" balls. One had to "click" on the xterm window for it to acquire focus.

Entering printenv at the xterm prompt indicates that window had been spawned and that a bash login had not been performed. To get the "proper" environment, I had to open Terminal to ensure that a login was performed prior to opening an xterm.

Thinking that this was a result of how I was starting the X server, I removed it from System Preferences>Accounts>Login items. Rebooted and invoked X11 from the Finder. Same problem. It had the wrong environment.

Perhaps, I'm weird but I want a login to be performed for each xterm that is opened as it would be for Terminal. Shouldn't starting the X server be a totally separate event from opening an xterm? And, shouldn't a login be performed for each xterm that is opened to ensure that the environment be set correctly?
