The idea of running another app instead of XTerm is probably not a bad
one.  Another way should be to set XUSERFILESEARCHPATH in the
environment to point at some more appropriate location, such as

  XUSERFILESEARCHPATH=$HOME/Library/X11/app-defaults/%N%C

which will cause xterm to look for its app-defaults file in
Library/X11/app-defaults/XTerm.

(Run "man X" and look for the section "application-specific files".
Unfortunately, that does not explain the significace of %N and %C:
IIRC, that is %N for the name of the application, and %C for the
suffic -color where appropriate.  The standard location for
app-defaults files is in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/.)
