default /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc simply calls "quartz-wm" - on 10.5, that means /usr/bin/quartz-qm is run, which won't work obviously.

updating to reflect /usr/X11R6/bin/quartz-wm, problem solved. X11.app from tiger runs and works as expected!

(caveat, can't drag across spaces. but hitting F8 and then dragging works)
