The installer log indicates it has a problem with the fact that
/Library/Receipts/X11User.pkg exists. When I remove that file, it
works!
somewhat interesting. when I checked /Library/Receipts, there wasn't any
mention of X11User.pkg on my system, which seemed odd, but I moved on.
