Yes there is nothing to stop you using any X window manager, you just lose the ability to do cut and paste between X11 and "regular" apps unless you run "quarz-wm --proxy-only".

as a candidate for the source of that bug.

Indeed. I happen to think that a lot of the blame can be laid at the door of Spaces. Spaces itself desperately needs an option to turn off auto screen switching, either globally or for certain apps. Even with Tiger X11 which works quite nicely with Spaces, I've noticed that Spaces likes to switch me back to the original screen I started X11 on whenever I close an xterm, which is quite annoying.
