Do I need to worry about the source tarball? Not a dumb question -- I'm putting these releases out for two reasons: 1. To encourage developers to build the source themselves, and help me find / fix bugs 2. To provide users with a "better" X11 to use while they are waiting for official fix from Apple (read: Software Update) Unless you want to participate in #1, you can stick with #2. Virtually all of the real guts of X11.app are in that one file -- /usr/X11/bin/Xquartz -- so it's the file I will be distributing updates for. It should not since only one binary is changed and it looks the same. If you fallow the instructions you can just copy the old version back very easily if it does cause problems with a software update. As I understand it, this is correct -- the Xquartz binary will be overwritten with the version from Software Update. Should this turn out to not be the case, I'll provide plenty of advance notice on this list. -- Ben Byer CoreOS / BSD Technology Group, XDarwin maintainer |
