Complexities of font rendering

I used to use Hummingbird Exceed on Windows XP as my X server.  Now that I have a Mac, under 2.2, I recently noticed, using xemacs from a remote machine running Fedora FC9, that the fonts "weren't as pretty as I was used to".  (See, even I know that's a vague and useless description.)

I did a quick check of Exceed 2007, installed under Parallels, and confirmed that "things looked different".  The font was the same font, nominally, but something was different: anti-aliasing, subpixels, hinting, I have no idea.  Exceed's font is also taller, but I think there are other differences.

I haven't done any digging yet.  I tried to do some Googling, but these days, most X usage is apparently local, and it's really hard for a novice (me) to understand which parts happen on the X client or its linked libraries and OS, and which parts on the X server and its OS.

So, before I go digging: Is font rendering one of those things that is known to be "not yet there" in Xquartz?  I saw many discussions about Apple's IP in font hinting, but I would assume (perhaps wrongly) that this isn't an issue if the X server and its OS are both from Apple - especially if it worked before with an X server on Windows.

I've put a screen shot of Xquartz vs. Exceed here:
