Re: remote emacs fonts and xorg.conf on Leopard

Just to add some more info to this, I'm having the same problem when I run emacs locally.  I have just upgraded to Leopard on both my desktop and my laptop, with the same problem.  In both cases, I am using a fink-installed version of emacs22-gtk (22.1-1003).  Here are the dependencies:

 otool -L /sw/bin/emacs
/sw/bin/emacs:
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libXaw.7.dylib (compatibility version 7.0.0, current version 7.0.0)
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.6.dylib (compatibility version 6.2.0, current version 6.2.0)
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.6.dylib (compatibility version 6.0.0, current version 6.0.0)
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.6.dylib (compatibility version 6.0.0, current version 6.0.0)
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.6.dylib (compatibility version 6.3.0, current version 6.3.0)
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.6.dylib (compatibility version 6.4.0, current version 6.4.0)
        /sw/lib/libtiff.3.dylib (compatibility version 12.0.0, current version 12.2.0)
        /sw/lib/libjpeg.62.dylib (compatibility version 63.0.0, current version 63.0.0)
        /sw/lib/libpng12.0.dylib (compatibility version 19.0.0, current version 19.0.0)
        /usr/lib/libz.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.2.3)
        /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 88.3.9)
        /sw/lib/libgif.4.dylib (compatibility version 6.0.0, current version 6.4.0)
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.4.dylib (compatibility version 4.11.0, current version 4.11.0)
        /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.6.dylib (compatibility version 6.2.0, current version 6.2.0)
        /sw/lib/ncurses/libncurses.5.dylib (compatibility version 5.0.0, current version 5.0.0)
        /usr/lib/libgcc_s.1.dylib (compatibility version 1.0.0, current version 1.0.0)

I would also appreciate a resolution to this problem, since it affects both my local emacs as well as emacs run remotely on a Linux machine.  For now, the trick of moving aside the 100dpi fonts is working, but this is obviously not a long-term solution.

Thanks,
Charles

Hmm...  is your emacs using xft or xfs?  Run 'ldd /usr/bin/emacs |
grep Xft'

What does 'xdpyinfo' show when you run it remotely?  It should say
the same... anx 84dpi is close enough to 75dpi that it shouldn't be
way-to-big.

It appears that xdpyinfo shows the same thing. emacs doesn't appear
to be running Xft, as shown. The remote machine is running Red Hat
Enterprise, to the best of my knowledge.

Ok, then would you mind trying an xft/fontconfig enabled version of
emacs to let me know how if it still is an issue in that case?  If you
don't have access to one, let me know, and I'll get you an account on
one of my linux boxes to test my hunch.

I have only Xft enabled versions of emacs on my remote boxes, and they
all look good font-size-wise when connecting from my Leopard box.

Have you run emacs on an X server local to that machine?

This worked fine in Tiger. I don't have access to the console of the
remote machine.

Ok, well if my hunch is right, we don't need that.  Please try out
what I mentioned above and get back to me.
