Harald,

24" iMac with stock 10.5.1 and all recent updates installed.

Does that include the latest X11 package from here?

If not, I suggest installing it.

I've held off doing that for the present until I get Time Machine set
up. I have been bitten on previous systems in the past installing stuff
(CUPS) independently of the Software Updates and although the Xquartz
stuff seems to be 'almost official', I'm still wary. Once the disk
arrives and I have it set up, I'll try it.

It should fix this problem.
