I think your results are entirely consistent with my theory in ticket 102: when you force a switch to another space by selecting an X11 window in that space, the visible display result is that you've changed to that space, but the part of Spaces that is in charge of space-switching still thinks you're in the previous space. So for example if you had been in space 1 to start with, control-rightarrow sends you to space 2, no matter which space you thought you'd jumped to by selecting another X11 window.
After fooling with it for a few hours, I'd say that 2.2.1 together with turning off workspaces-auto-swoosh produces an environment that is worth my time to criticize; up to now Spaces has been so bad that I'd rather just work in one space. But it's still full of bugs. I've filed a few today and fully expect to be filing more as I work with it ...
