I don't think it's a font issue. I'd guess an endianness bug in X11 itself,
but this doesn't even look like the endianness bugs I've seen before.
But if it works fine on Intel then it's almost certainly endianness related.

Is there anything I can do to test this? And incidentally, in case it's relevant, the problem gets worse with time, and eventually leads to a crash.
