Oops - I think I hadn't actually restarted the Intel machine. I now see exactly the same problem there as well. Sorry all.

Is this kde running on the same system as the X server?

No.

What happens if you run the same kde app on a remote X server?

This is what I'm doing: have a remote machine running Scientific Linux 4, and I log into that machine and start Kate. X11 then opens on my machine and shows me the (corrupted) kate window.

No... that's not what I asked... What happens if you run that kde app on a remote X server. You are running it on the local X server (your Mac's X server). What happens when you run it on another X server (like that linux box)? In other word, have it display on that other system.

What is the output of:

otool -L /path/to/the/application

There's no otool under SL4, so I guess this is mac only?

Run ldd /path/to/application
