No... that's not what I asked... What happens if you run that kde app on a remote X server. You are running it on the local X server (your Mac's X server). What happens when you run it on another X server (like that linux box)? In other word, have it display on that other system.

I think I have made some progress tracking this down though - by some horribly time-consuming playing with LD_LIBRARY_PATH (server side) I've confirmed that this path :
/afs/cern.ch/atlas/offline/external/LCGCMT/LCGCMT_54f/InstallArea/i686- slc4-gcc34-opt/lib
gets add to LD_LIBRARY_PATH during our setup script, and it's this (and only this), that causes the problem.

In other words:
- empty LD_LIBRARY_PATH : no problems
- LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/afs/cern.ch/atlas/offline/external/LCGCMT/ LCGCMT_54f/InstallArea/i686-slc4-gcc34-opt/lib : messed up kate

There's quite a lot in there (the listing is added to the end of the email) and so I don't really know what to try next.
