It works for me.  I just did this:
/opt/X11/bin/Xnest :10

and in another terminal:
DISPLAY=:10 /opt/X11/bin/xterm

What do you think is failing with Xephyr and Xnest.  Please don't just downgrade without reporting the problems, or they won't get fixed.
