It's entirely anecdotal, but in my experience yes, there is a significantly increased chance of disk corruption when it is more than about three-quarters full, or less than about 2 gig remaining (whichever is bigger).

I've also found one several occasions that using up the entire disk often results in it immediately becoming unbootable!

I'm not sure whether this is a HFS+ issue or a MacOS X issue, although in any case I've found disabling journalling helps reduce such corruption significantly under Panther.  No issues as yet with Tiger.
