Are you sure the machine isn't going to sleep?

As of Xcode 2.2, distccd (distccschedd is gone. yay.) is entirely controlled via launchd. You can use launchctl to manage the daemon from the command line. The Xcode preferences pane [indirectly, for security reasons] uses launchctl to enable/disable the daemon.
