1) The "Condensed" layout works like this by default. It's much more comfortable to people who aren't accustomed to embedded editors. Close all projects, choose Xcode Preferences, General pane, and Condensed layout. All projects you open will have just the Groups and Files list and no editor, and double-clicking will open new files in a separate window. 2) If you choose to stay in Default layout, there's always the contextual menu "Open in New Window" which is always available when a file is selected or open. Two hints: - Add the "Editor State" button to your toolbar and make sure that it is set to "Ungrouped" to prevent new files from opening in a current editor window. - The only preference you need to set is the "Counterparts open in same editor" preference; uncheck it if you want "Go to Counterpart" to open a separate window.
