What and when gives you this error message?  A sheet or alert in FileMerge, or a command line instruction?

Please be more detailed here; are you doing opendiff left right ? Or opening left and right in FileMerge?  I tried both, and both worked for me.  Please list specific steps you took and what results you got, in detail.

I can reproduce here using either opendiff or the Compare Files dialog.  This is with Xcode Tools 2.3, Mac OS X 10.4.6 8I1119 (Intel).  rdar://4565430.

Thanks for the detailed steps.  It only fails when . is in the right-side file, oddly enough; opendiff right left does not fail.
