External Build - errors and warnings problem

I set up an external build target to use GNU make (OS X 10.5.1, XCode 3.0), and I'm able to build. However, XCode fails to associate compiler errors/warnings with source code, unless the XCode project resides in the same directory as the Makefile. This is not possible for projects with multiple Makefiles.

I suspect that XCode's source path resolver is ignoring the Directory property in the target's Custom Build Command setting when parsing build output.

I've tried various configurations, including make's -C option, with no luck. An ancient thread (http://lists.apple.com/archives/xcode-users/2005/Jan/msg00318.html ) discusses this problem, but no solution was posted.

Has anyone solved this?

Thanks,
