That's just silly. IANAL but the license clearly states, "The output from running a covered work is covered by this License only if the output, given its content, constitutes a covered work." That would include the output of gcc.

As you say, there is no point us getting into a discussion about what GPL3 means.


However, Apple's actions indicate that its lawyers believe that GPL3 is either in conflict or potentially in conflict with Apple's business model. That is all that matters for a crystal ball gazer trying to guess what happens next.

If they were really happy with GPL3, why have they avoided releasing anything with a GPL3 license? They have previously been quite quick to pick up recent gcc code.
