Integrating Xgrid with Particle Physics grids

Hi,

I'm new to this list and to Xgrid. I work as a systems administrator for
the ScotGrid-Glasgow [1] site within the UK-wide GridPP [2] research
project. We're focused on deploying the LCG2 grid middleware for use in
analysing data for particle physics experiments at CERN and elsewhere.

Most sites within GridPP currently run OpenPBS for job batching. A
smaller number run Sun GridEngine. The LCG2 middleware is, in theory,
batch system agnostic and I'm curious about the feasibility of dropping in
Xgrid as a replacement for OpenPBS or SGE.

It seems that Xgrid isn't an exact conceptual match for a traditional
batch system, but I'm wondering if the worlds can be sufficiently bridged
to make it appear like a single queue to the Grid.

The LCG2 middleware defines a machine called a Compute Element which is a
linux box that 'speaks LCG2' to the world and 'speaks OpenPBS/SGE' to its
backend farm. My initial approach to the task of integrating Xgrid with
this is to write an Xgrid client tool that will run on a Linux box and
submit jobs to an Xgrid controller on a Mac OS X box. This seems to be
the easier path than porting the entire Compute Element middleware to Mac
OS X. I know that there's already an Xgrid agent implementation for
Linux.

Has anyone done anything like this, or considered doing it and hit a
showstopper? I'm just curious because there's a hell of a lot of
purchasing going on and it would make me happy to see some Xserves in my
machine room.

I should note that I'm looking at this as a side/personal project and
don't speak for LCG2, GridPP or the University of Glasgow.

Cheers,
Fraser
