In my continuing work with running xgrid batch jobs, I now have this
script, which seems to be much simpler than the others I posted in
the past, and stable. I prefer NOT to run this script on the
controller, but this script has a setting that will let you run it on
the controller if you wish to (set $stop_xgrid_crashes to 1 to run it
on the controller).

So it looks like the xgrid command only hangs when it is executed on
the controller. I wrote a script that cycled through dummy jobs
over and over. If I run it on the controller, it hangs within a few
minutes, if not instantly. But when I run it on a computer that
isn't the controller, it ran for several hours. The only problem is
timed out connections:
2004-07-04 20:29:53.287 xgrid[9678] error: could not connect to
my_xgrid.server.com (reason unknown)
