xsan 1.2 metadata controller not rebooting

has anyone with problems rebooting their metadata controller been able to resolve it?

my problem occurs when i try to reboot my xserve it does not completely shutdown. a ps -aux shows that umount is in a U state. sc_usage on the umount process id does not show any information that helps me. i can reboot the server without any issues within a certain period of time, however, i do not know the exact time frame. then after a day or so i will encounter the problem. to reboot i power it off and on again. as a result i am very reluctant to restart the server remotely. is there anyway for me to tell what specifically the kernel is waiting for to pass onto the umount process? maybe then i could narrow down the cause. any work around, or solution would be welcome.

i do not know if this is related, but i also just noticed this file on the hard drive /nohup.out. i am not sure if the file was there before or after i tried to reboot.

my metadata controller is my only client. the XSAN volume is being shared via AFP and SMB. in addition, recently i had a hardware problem with my backup library, but it was replaced and so far it is working ok.
