DER decoding

I have a DER encoded string that I got from the
CSSMOID_X509V1SubjectName field of a SecIdentityRef.

What is the recommended way of decoding it?

I've managed to hack the string out, and it seems to work fine in all
cases so far, but what is the correct way?
