Smart card debugging

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for debugging a smart card recognition problem we are having with Mac OS X 10.6.3.

We have Gemalto Gemplus USB SmartCard Readers (USB sticks with captured smart cards) which don't seem to be recognized (show up in Keychain Access) in *certain* installations of 10.6.3. On new machines/fresh reinstalls the device shows up and works as the vendor says it should but not on some machines with some time on them. The difference between them other than age of installation is not evident. Frustrating to say the least.

I've found the "pcsctest" command but it returns the same as if no device is connected: "Service not available"
At the same time though the System Profiler USB section does show the "0x08E6" Gemplus device as recognized at least at some level.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Keith
